I am very frustrated with this player and I wish I had bought something else. I use it for four things:

* Listening to music stored on a USB memory stick,
* Listening to the radio (mostly HD stations),
* Hands-free phone conversations, and
* Navigation.

Because it doesn't support the lossless Windows media audio format, I had to convert my music (over 1000 CDs) into a lossy MP3 format. My car has good speakers, and I care a lot about audio quality, so I used the highest MP3 bit rate supported by the player. Unfortunately (and their online documentation confirms this), this strains the limits of the player to keep up and so the music will randomly pause for a few seconds during playback. On average, this happens one to two times per song. In addition, the entire unit will occasionally reboot, though not that often when playing music from a USB source (maybe once or twice a week).

However, when listening to HD radio stations, the unit reboots a lot, sometimes as frequently as every few minutes. It also seems to depend on which station I'm listening to--on some stations, it hardly reboots at all, while on one particular station, it will reboot multiple times during a single song.

On the positive side, though, I've never had it reboot during a phone conversation (I use it with my iPhone 3GS). The sound is clear (no Bluetooth distortion) and the other side can hear my clearly. There have been times when the unit and my iPhone will refuse to talk to each other, and the only way to fix it has been to delete them from each other's Bluetooth lists and then have them rediscover each other.

The best thing about the unit is the navigation. I don't necessarily follow the exact route it recommends (it can't adjust for local traffic conditions), but it's great for getting me to locations I've never been to before.

That being said, the media-related user interfaces are hard to use. Some of the on-screen buttons are small, and you have to hit them precisely to get them to work. This is difficult to do in a moving vehicle. In addition, common tasks (such as choosing a different album) take many more button presses than they need to, which means I have to take my eyes off the road frequently. Changing radio stations is also burdensome. The presets aren't displayed until you press a button, and then there are only six. If you want to choose a station not on that list, you have to change radio bands (FM1, FM2, AM) until you get to the one with the preset you're looking for. A few seconds after that, the preset list goes away. If you change stations frequently (as I do), this becomes very distracting while driving.

Kenwood has not released any firmware updates for the multimedia part of this unit since I wrote my original review (below).

When the factory CD player in my 350Z recently went out, I stopped by a local car stereo installation shop where they recommended this unit. Now that I've owned it for a couple of weeks, I wish I had researched it first. It has a lot of features, sounds good and has a very clear display. However, I feel those positives are outweighed by a large number of annoyances.

* It takes about 20 seconds to start up.
* It randomly reboots (which aggravates the slow start up).
* If you play music from your iPhone and don't disconnect it between turning off and turning your car back on, it will resume playing from where it left off for about 10 seconds and then go totally silent. You have to disconnect the iPhone and then reconnect it to get the sound back (and that doesn't always work).
* USB storage device options are limited. It only supports FAT16 and FAT32 partitions, and only up to 32GB in size.
* In addition, it only supports up to 255 folders and 255 files per folder. That may seem like a lot, but I was planning on attaching a large solid-state drive to the unit with a copy of my entire CD collection, which far exceeds those limits.
* It only supports up to 320Kbps WMA encoding, and not lossless. I cannot listen to anything in my Windows Media library without converting it.
* The user interface often requires you to navigate through multiple menus/screens to perform common functions. For example, if you are playing music while the navigation screen is up and you want to change tracks, you have to navigate back to the AV source screen first. This is very distracting while driving, and all the more annoying given that the current song's title is shown at the bottom of the navigation screen. Why didn't they put a few common buttons (forward, back, pause) next to the song title?

Overall, I cannot recommend this unit. I have reconfirmed that all of these problems and limitations exist with the latest firmware versions as of Dec. 18, 2009 (GPS version 3.20 and player version 1.8).
